FROM READERS: Qigong Grandmaster to present at MU

April 24, 2012 | 9:00 a.m. CDT

Ruth Ann Striegel is the owner of Energetic Wellness, LLC, and specializes in Reiki, Qigong, Flower Essences, and Feng Shui.

A woman with Cerebral Palsy wrote this testimonial. The woman was pronounced dead at birth because the umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck. Throughout her life, she has been confined to a wheelchair, and now because of Chow Medical Qigong, she is able to get out of the chair by herself, stand alone, and is slowly but surely beginning to walk again. Read her story:

As a person who was born dead and was told all of my life I would never walk, I was accepting of that fate.  I struggled throughout my life to prove the doctors wrong, teaching myself to speak and to do things on my own.  In high school I tried to walk, only to find it much too difficult, so I resigned myself to using a wheelchair. I wanted to help others like myself so I did what others thought I could not do. I earned my degree in Social Work and became a licensed social worker.  All of this I did from my wheelchair and all the while embracing my Cerebral Palsy as a part of who I am.

However, a most powerful and amazing thing happened to me less then 5 months ago.  I met a woman name Dr. Effie Chow who told me I could walk.  When I heard this I was in total disbelief.  I was told all of my life I would never walk, but now I was being told the exact opposite.  So I started to work with Dr. Chow and practice her Chow Medical Qigong exercises.  In less than three months my speech was more intelligible so others understood me more easily. My handwriting improved. This year when my mother received her birthday card from me with a note I had written, she called and said, “Katie, I did not have to guess what the words were, I could clearly read them!”

Since others were noticing my improvement, I knew something was really changing for me.  I continued seeing, Dr. Chow and practicing all the exercises she prescribed.   Now, I am able to stand without support for short times without getting tired!  Recently I stood in church for the very first time and it felt so good to be able to do what everyone else was doing. I am also beginning to be able to walk!

I now truly believe what Dr. Chow told me when I first met her. I want to continue to work with her to be able to walk as freely as other people do.

Another client with retinal detachment and then macular degeneration, who had never clearly seen her daughter, is now able to distinguish the daughter’s face after Dr. Chow worked with her. Clients have been able to rid themselves of chronic migraine headaches, tinnitus, insomnia, and numerous other conditions. A man who suffered a severe bilateral stroke and was making no progress in a rehabilitation center is now walking.

Deepak Chopra, MD says of Dr. Chow, “Effie Chow is one of the strongest energy based healers and acupuncturists I have met, and I have seen with my own eyes some of the remarkable results of her Qigong work.”

The basis of Dr. Chow’s Integrated Medical Qigong is based on correct posture, diaphragmatic breathing, a specific series of qigong exercises, positive thinking, being able to visualize what you want, and connections with others. For years her basic prescription has been eight hugs and three bellyaching laughs a day!

Dr. Chow has been honored nationally and around the world for her tireless work to bring qigong into the mainstream of wellness practices. This year World Tai Chi and Qigong Day, April 28th is dedicated to Dr. Chow and another qigong master, Dr. Ken Sancier. Local celebrations are planned at Peace Park this Saturday.

And the really good news is Dr. Chow is coming from San Francisco to Columbia! She will be at Allen Auditorium in MU’s Arts and Sciences Building Friday, May 4th from 7-9:30 PM for a FREE presentation about Chow Medical Qigong. She will also do demonstrations of qigong with members of the audience. Get your FREE ticket at
