COLUMBIA — As the sun sets over Cosmopolitan Park every Tuesday in the spring and summer, pats on the back and friendly banter are commonplace in the Over 50 Softball League.

Members of the men's Over 50 Softball League gather to play a game each week from April to July. Although players must be at least 50 years old or turn 50 during the calendar year, some are older than 70.

Forty-eight games are played at Cosmo Park's Rainbow Softball Center.

For many, it's a way to stay involved in a sport they've played throughout their lives.

"We all still like the game or else we wouldn't be out here," said Bo Hendley, captain of the MPSI/Boone team.

Hendley has been playing softball for 27 years and will turn 50 in October. He joined the league this year and considers it a fun way to stay active.

"It beats running on a treadmill," he said.
