FROM READERS: Lunch in the Park program needs volunteers

Wednesday, May 9, 2012 | 6:00 a.m. CDT; updated 8:27 p.m. CDT, Wednesday, May 9, 2012

Ron Schmidt is Project Director at the Voluntary Action Center.

The Voluntary Action Center, Health Department and the department of Parks and Recreation are collaborating to offer the Lunch in the Park program, which provides nutritious lunches, as well as educational programming, to children during the summer. Started in 2001, the program at Douglass Park provides approximately 4,000 healthy lunches to children each year.

Lunch in the Park needs volunteers to help serve lunch to the children on Mondays and Wednesdays between 11:15 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. from June 11 to Aug. 10. This is a great opportunity for anyone 11 and older, families, clubs, etc. If you are available one or more days, please contact Ron Schmidt at 573-874-2273, ext. 203 or email

Special thanks to the following clubs for already being signed up to help serve again this year: Columbia Kiwanis, Downtown Rotary, Golden K Kiwanis, Rising Sun Lodge and Sunrise Rotary.

In addition, if you or your group would like to provide an educational program on one or more days, please contact Laura Starjak at 573-874-7384.
