Howard Pemberton was decorated Army veteran

COLUMBIA — Howard L. Pemberton of Storm Lake, Iowa, and formerly of Columbia, died Tuesday, May 8, 2012. He was 92.

He was born June 14, 1919, in Hallsville to Clyde and Cleo (Bryan) Pemberton. 

Mr. Pemberton married Lucille Cox on March 28, 1942, in Columbia. She died on April 23, 2001.

He married Ardys Heinshon on June 29, 2002, in Storm Lake.

Mr. Pemberton was a decorated soldier in the Army. He earned a battlefield commission, two Silver Stars, one Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts while serving with the 90th Infantry between 1942 and 1945.

He worked for Riback Supply Company for 26 years.

He is survived by his wife; three sons, Lawrence Ray Pemberton, William Floyd Pemberton and Gary Lee Pemberton; three daughters, Brenda Kay Amend, Cheryl Ann Gysbers and Carol Jean Shafer; 14 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

His first wife and his brother, William G. Pemberton, died earlier.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.
