FROM READERS: Mid-Mo Yo-Yo Expo

Wednesday, May 30, 2012 | 4:58 p.m. CDT
This was the inaugural year for Mid-Mo Yo Yo Expo, a yo-yo contest, designed to bring together players from Columbia, St. Louis, Kansas City and surrounding areas.

Chris Neff of Jefferson City has worked as a professional yo-yo demonstrator and is an experienced competitor. He is the reigning World Spin Top champion. (To see what Spin Top tricks look like, see the video of Chris performing that's embedded at the bottom of this post.)

This was the inaugural year for Mid-Mo Yo Yo Expo, a yo-yo contest, designed to bring together players from Columbia, St. Louis, Kansas City and surrounding areas. The event was held at the Parkade Center on Saturday, May 26. (Results are available here.)

This year is perhaps a little unique, it is a state-level contest that is not a state contest. Winning a state contest "seeds" you for regional finals, in this case the Mid West Regional contest June 23 at the Mall of America in Minnesota.

This year the official Missouri State Contest (MOYO) has been delayed, so MMYYXPO produced this year's Missouri 1A and Open seed. In the future MMYYXPO may not produce seeds, but it will continue to bring together Missouri yo yo players for good fun and a little competition.

Prizes were donated by Yo Yo Jam, Duncan, Square Wheels Yo Yos based in Kansas City, SPYY from Canada, Yo Yo Expert (a great online store/forum/instructional video resource). First through 3rd received prizes in each of our 6 divisions. There were 26 competitors.

We have a yo yo club in Columbia called Yo Yo Ninja Workshop. We meet most Sundays from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at Benton Elementary School located at 1410 Hinkson Ave., Columbia, MO 65201. We are on Facebook, and I am working on a website that should be up soon.
