COLUMBIA – Columbia resident Donald Hawkins died Tuesday afternoon in a motorcycle accident in Cooper County.

According to a Missouri State Highway Patrol report on the incident, Hawkins, 39, was thrown from his 2008 Harley Davidson after he entered a curve on the highway, drifted to its left side and collided with the road's median cables.

The accident occurred at 3:20 p.m. near the 112.6 mile marker of Interstate 70, said Cathy Holmes, assistant chief operator for Missouri State Highway Patrol's Troop F.

Hawkins was pronounced dead on the scene at 3:55 p.m.

Holmes said that there is no indication that Hawkins was speeding; he was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

The report said this is the 27th fatality in Troop F's jurisdiction in 2012 and is its fifth fatality for the month of May.
