John E. Elias, PhD, 75, of Columbia, peacefully passed away surrounded by his loving family on May 21, 2012.
John was born December 11, 1936, in Atchison, KS to Agnes (Cavanaugh) and Hubert Elias. He married Judy Lee Eckart in 1959, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Atchison, KS, and she preceded him in death.
John retired from the University of Missouri after 25 years. He was very instrumental in shaping and inspiring many young minds. He was a determined, courageous man, and to know him was to love and respect him. Not only was John a beloved teacher and mentor, but the founder and President of Inter-Tech, Inc., a mentoring company dedicated to supporting disadvantaged youth. John was also a prolific author, publishing many textbooks, and the widely successful, recently released work of fiction, "The Northlander."
John was a nature lover in every sense of the word; he raised and trained English Setters and German short-haired Pointers, was an accomplished hunter, fisherman and equestrian. He was a highly spiritual and moral man and a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic parish. John was an active member of Kiwanis in later years.
Funeral service will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, June 2, 2012, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Columbia, MO. A visitation will be held the evening prior, from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., at the church. There will be a memorial service at 1:00 P.M. on Sunday, June 3, 2012, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Atchison, KS, and burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Atchison, where he will be buried beside his mother and father and with the true love of his life, Judy Elias.
He is survived by his children: Lisa Martin (Keith) of Columbia, MO, Alan Elias (Dawn) of Austin, TX, Michael Elias (Chris) of Marina Del Rey, CA, and Paula Elias (Ken Leija) of Columbia, MO; siblings: Bill Elias (Julie) of Six Mile, SC, Mary Kay Elias Bohannon (Lee) of Kansas City, MO, Anne McNulty (Tim) of Chicago, IL, Sr. Therese Elias of Kansas City, MO, Charles Elias (Ginny) of Atchison, KS, and Dorothy Lickteig (Wayne) of Corpus Christi, TX; grandchildren: Daniel Nichols and Marissa Nichols both of Columbia, MO, Jakob Elias and Brianna Elias both of Austin, TX, Allison Elias of Marina Del Rey, CA, Quanah Leija-Elias of Santa Fe, NM, and Rafael Leija- Elias of Columbia, MO.
John will be laid to rest with the mother of his children and his favorite bird dog Alex.
