COLUMBIA — Local skateboarders will have the opportunity Saturday to show off their tricks while learning safety tips at this year's Shred Fest at Cosmopolitan Park.

The event will feature three contests in which riders can participate: The Tic-Tac Race will be a competition for small children, the Timed Trial Run will be a race for intermediate skateboarders and the third contest has yet to be announced, said city recreation specialist Erin Carrillo.

Tiger Pilot of Columbia will be giving away helmets to promote safe riding. In addition, the Youth Community Coalition will be selling snacks and handing out information on safe and healthy choices. Shred Fest will also feature free skating time, music and giveaways.

An advanced group of skateboarders will also be present demonstrating skateboarding tricks, Carrillo said.

The event runs from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Columbia Skate Park in Cosmo Park. All ages are welcome and admission is free.

Supervising editor is Jake Kreinberg.
