COLUMBIA — Linda Barnes was devoted to her work as a Center for Responsive Education data specialist with Columbia Public Schools.

“Linda was a silent wonder,” her co-worker Sharon Miller said. “She took great pride in assuring the data reported to the state was accurate and timely. Even with her illness, Linda gave the district dedicated service.”

Linda Barnes died Wednesday, May 30, 2012, after a six-year battle with cancer. She was 58.

Mrs. Barnes was born Dec. 7, 1953, to Beulah and Sidney Wear.

Years later, she met her husband, Frank. He knew they were meant to be, but Mrs. Barnes' co-worker Linda Christensen said she didn’t realize he was the one until after a year of close friendship.

They married on June 25, 1983, and had three daughters.

Because of their common first name, Christensen said co-workers called Mrs. Barnes “LB” and herself “LC”. But the two shared more than just a name.

Christensen and Mrs. Barnes both fought breast cancer around the same time, and Christensen acted as a coach for Mrs. Barnes during her chemotherapy. She met with her and took care of her on Monday nights.

Christensen said that with chemotherapy, there were strange side effects. When Mrs. Barnes complained that her fingernails hurt, Christensen understood.

“We would try to laugh about it as much as possible,” Christensen said.

Another co-worker, Mary Laffey said that Mrs. Barnes was an inspiration to others through her positive outlook in life.

Mrs. Barnes is survived by her husband, Frank C. Barnes II; daughters, Christin Heuther and her husband, Jason, Lindsey Barnes and Shannon Barnes; seven brothers and sisters, Kenneth Wear and his wife, Cheryl, Junior Wear and his wife, Marvyda, Liz White, Mary Zentz and her husband, Albert, Jerry Wear and his wife, Barbee, Joanne Jewett and Jim Wear and his wife, Leisa; her father-in-law, Bill Barnes; her sister-in-law, Kathy Curtis and her husband, Steve; and many nieces and nephews.

Her parents, Beulah and Sidney Wear, her mother-in-law, Elsie K. Barnes, her brother-in-law, Bruce Jewett, and three infant nieces and nephews died earlier.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Grace Bible Church, 601 Blue Ridge Road. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the same location. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, 1217 Business Loop 70 E.
