COLUMBIA — Gordon “Gomez” Sackett loved the outdoors.

He had a passion for fishing, archery and almost anything he could do in nature.

"If it was outside, he loved doing it," daughter Hannah Sackett said.

Mr. Sackett died Wednesday, June 6, 2012. He was 53 years old.

Mr. Sackett was born Oct. 15, 1958, in Woodriver, Ill., to George and Sandra (Brown) Sackett. He was a Navy veteran and worked in the housekeeping department of Truman Veterans Hospital, his daughter said.

"He was just a goofy old man," Hannah Sackett said. "But he was also a very hard worker."

Hannah Sackett said her father was always trying to get those around him involved in the outdoors.

“I remember when he took me fishing when I was little,” she said. “A big fish was pulling me under the water, and he was going after the fish.”

Mr. Sackett is survived by his significant other, Alice Gravitt, of Columbia; children Hannah Sackett, of Quincy, Ill., Clara Swackhammer, of Mount Pleasant, Iowa, and Caleb Sackett, of Mendon, Ill.; four siblings, his mother and two grandchildren.

Mr. Sackett's father died earlier.

Services will be private.
