Wednesday, June 13, 2012 | 6:55 p.m. CDT

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Twenty-five people from Kansas, California and other states are charged in federal court with taking part in a marijuana distribution ring.

The U.S. Attorney's office in Kansas City, Kan., announced the charges Wednesday as federal agents served search warrants and made arrests in Johnson and Douglas counties.

Prosecutors said the 25 defendants were charged in a sealed complaint that was filed Monday. They're accused of conspiring from April 2008 until this month to distribute more than 1,000 kilos of high-grade marijuana in Johnson and Douglas counties.

It wasn't clear Wednesday evening how many of the suspects were in custody. They include eight Lawrence residents, seven from the Johnson County cities of Olathe, Lenexa and Overland Park, and one from Kansas City, Mo. Others are from California and Washington state.
