JACKSON — A southeast Missouri man is injured and facing charges for allegedly shooting at his wife and then turning the gun on police, who shot back.

Authorities say 45-year-old Lawrence Guthrie of Jackson was charged Wednesday with three counts of assault on a law officer and one count each of domestic assault and armed criminal action.

Guthrie's wife called 911 on Wednesday to report a domestic assault that involved shots being fired. She was not struck by a bullet.

Cape Girardeau County Prosecutor Morley Swingle says that Guthrie fired shots at several responding officers. Police returned fire. Guthrie was taken to a St. Louis hospital, but Swingle says it isn't clear if the wounds are from the exchange with police or self-inflicted.
