Creola Jones, April 18, 1915 — June 14, 2012

Creola S. Jones, 97, of Columbia, formerly of the Moberly and Cairo, Mo., areas, died Thursday, June 14, 2012, at The Neighborhoods by Tiger Place in Columbia, after a brief illness. She was born to Aubrey E. and Opal (Halliburton) Skinner on April 18, 1915 at their farm home southeast of Cairo.

 She received an associate's degree in education from Moberly Junior College in 1934. She then received a degree in Elementary Education, a degree in Secondary Education majoring in English and a Master's degree in Guidance and Counseling from Northeast Missouri State University at Kirksville. She taught in the Cairo school district for 26 years, later she was employed by Northeast Missouri State College in Kirksville where she was Freshman Counselor until her retirement in 1977. She had completed her cycle of teaching from 1st grade in a country school to the college level and loved every minute of it. 

Creola led a very active life. She did volunteer work in Columbia at Ellis Fischel and the Columbia Public Library. She was director of the Missouri Woman’s Club for two years, was a member of local, state and National Teachers’ Assoc., member of Cancer Auxiliary of Ellis Fischel, member of Cairo Eastern Star and had received her 50 year pin. She was also an ardent Mizzou Tiger fan. She was the oldest member of the Cairo Christian Church and had been a Sunday school teacher for many years.

Creola married Orley Jones in 1940 at Trenton, and he preceded her in death in 1968. Also preceding her in death were her parents; half-sister, Marjorie Skinner Taylor; aunts, uncles and cousins.

She is survived by her daughter, Jacquelyn Kay Jones of Columbia; niece Pamela Riedel; nephew Mike Taylor; several cousins; and hundreds of "her kids," as she called her former students.

Memorials to the Cairo Christian Church or Mizzou Botanic Garden at the University of Missouri would be appreciated.

Services will be Monday 11:00 AM at the CATER Funeral Home Chapel, Moberly, MO with interment in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, 1:30 PM to 5:30 PM at the Cater Funeral Home, Moberly, MO.
