COLUMBIA — Jessie Washington Miller was passionate about family and mechanics.
Mr. Miller devoted a lot of time to his church, Dripping Spring Christian Church. During his tenure there, he built a cement wheelchair ramp, a fellowship hall and a play yard for children, said Fred Erickson, former Dripping Spring pastor.
Jessie Washington Miller died Thursday, June 14, 2012. He was 91.
Mr. Miller was born April 6, 1921, in Boone County to Charley and Edzy (Breedlove) Miller. He married Mahala Nichols on Dec. 9, 1944.
Mr. Miller worked for 32 years as a mechanic for the city of Columbia. He also lent his expertise to members of his church.
Erickson said everyone in the church community had a motor worked on by Mr. Miller. He was always helping someone with their tractor or lawn mower, Erickson said.
"It was a joy to have him in the church," Erickson said. "If there was something going on, he was there to help."
Connie Fares, Mr. Miller's daughter, took care of him and his wife. Fares said Mr. Miller loved to go outside to work in the garden or on his tractors.
"I loved him with all my heart," she said. "It's gonna hurt like the dickens (to be without him)."
Mr. Miller is survived by a daughter, Connie L. Fares of Columbia; a son, Terry Lynn Miller, of Columbia; a grandson, Floyd W. Fares and wife, Michelle, of Columbia; two nephews, James Miller and wife, Martha, of Honolulu, and Danny Miller and wife, Fay, of Columbia; five nieces, Pam Miller, Patricia Fagan and Vicki Purdy, all of Columbia, Sandra Miller of Oak Grove and Beverly Palmer and husband, Don, of Mexico, Mo.
