Harry Potter fans attended a trivia night on Friday at Hickman High School. Ticket sales benefited The Eliminate Project, which raises money toward the elimination of maternal and neonatal tetanus in Third World countries.

COLUMBIA — Harry Potter fans gathered in droves Friday night for the Columbia Kiwanis Club's first Harry Potter Trivia Night.

The event was a fundraiser for the Eliminate Project, a joint effort between UNICEF and Kiwanis International to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus worldwide.

Hundreds of children and adults made their way to Hickman High School to be sorted into their appropriate Hogwarts houses, choose a wand — or let it choose them — and even join the Columbia chapter of the student activist group Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare. Volunteers at Gringotts Bank donned pointy ears like their goblin counterparts, and live owls from the MU Raptor Rehabilitation Program stole the show.

The main event began at 7 p.m. with a total of 31 tables competing in the Harry Potter trivia tournament. At $100 per table, that means $3,100 was raised before money from sponsors, concessions, auction items and taking out expenses.

Although the event ran out of Butterbeer, plenty of laughter could still be heard throughout the night.

For anyone who missed out on the magic, here is a sampling of the questions. Do you think you know all things Harry Potter? Find out by taking the quiz:

Actually the amount raised (before expenses) including the carnival, astronomy night and silent auction was closer to $7000. Not bad eh? Worth traveling all the way from Hogwarts for that...
