Columbia's restaurants that satisfy vegetarian preferences

COLUMBIA — Although Columbia has only a few vegetarian restaurants, many others near campus have wonderful vegetarian options.

Main Squeeze on Ninth Street is strictly vegetarian while El Rancho, Bangkok Gardens, Saigon Bistro and others are vegetarian friendly.

Main Squeeze

It’s the best vegetarian restaurant downtown, perhaps the only one. It is within walking distance of campus and offers local and organic food. They have cute menus, and they serve breakfast at 10 a.m.

Location: 28 S. Ninth St.

Distance: Half a mile from Ellis library, a 9-minute walk.

Hours: Monday - Saturday, 10 a.m. - 8 p.m.; Sunday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. 

Recommended: Smoothies, Buddha bowl, Works bowl, White Cheddar sandwich.

El Rancho

This is not a fancy restaurant, but it offers quality Mexican food at a low price and has vegetarian plates.

Location: 1014 E. Broadway

Distance: Half a mile from Ellis library, a 9-minute walk.

Hours: Monday - Wednesday, 11 a.m. - 2 a.m.; Thursday - Saturday 11 a.m.- 3 a.m.; Sunday 11 a.m. - 11 p.m.

Recommended: Mushroom quesadilla.

Bangkok Gardens

This Thai restaurant is adjacent to the city garage, which means plenty of parking spots. It offers a number of vegan choices. Closed Sunday.

Location: 811 Cherry St.

Distance: Half a mile from Ellis library, a 9-minute walk.

Hours: Monday - Thursday, 11 a.m.- 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.- 9 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m.- 2 p.m. and 5 - 10 p.m.

Recommended: Vegetarian Fried Dumplings; Combo Vegetarian Platter; Green Curry noodles (with tofu); Siam Village Rolls (has vegetarian option); Thai iced tea.

Saigon Bistro

This is a Vietnamese restaurantwith traditional Southeast Asian decoration. It’s easy to miss the entrance, which is next door to Elly's Couture. 

Location: 912 E. Broadway.

Distance: Half a mile from Ellis library, a 10-minute walk.

Hours: Monday - Thursday, 11 a.m.- 8 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. - 9 p.m.

Recommended: Noodle soup; Vegetarian Pho; Vegetarian Curry.

Kui Korean BBQ

This is a typical Korean restaurant, famous for meat dishes. It has limited yet good vegetarian options with no waiting and good service.

Location: 22 N. Ninth St.

Distance: 0.6 mile from Ellis library, an 11-minute walk.

Hours: Monday - Saturday, 11 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. and 4 - 9:30 p.m.

Recommended: Tofu Bibimbap, Kimbap, Cinnamon tea.

Room 38

The restaurant serves original food, including vegetarian dishes.

Location: 38 N. Eighth St.

Distance: 0.6 mile from Ellis library, an 11-minute walk.

Hours: Monday - Saturday, 11 a.m.- 1:30 a.m. (full menu 11 a.m. - 10 p.m.)

Recommended: Vegetarian flatbread; Roasted Red Pepper Hummus with vegetables and chips; Veggie Portobello sandwich

Flat Branch Pub & Brewing

Flat Branch has vegetarian options that are as good as its other dishes. It has a relaxing atmosphere and a nice patio area.

Location: 115 S. Fifth St.

Distance: 0.6 mile from Ellis library, a 10-minute walk.

Hours: Sunday - Thursday, 11 a.m. - midnight; Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. - 1 a.m.

Recommended: Vegetarian Pasta; Flat Branch Veggie Burger.
