VICHY — A central Missouri sheriff says a Highway Patrol trooper is safe after she was briefly held hostage by her ex-boyfriend. The man was later found dead, an apparent suicide.

The trooper was off-duty when the incident occurred Wednesday afternoon at her home in Maries County.

Sheriff Chris Heitman said police and sheriff's deputies were called while the trooper was held at gunpoint. The woman was able to break free and run outside.

Officers then heard a single gunshot and found the ex-boyfriend dead inside the home. The sheriff said it appears the man shot himself in the head.

The man was a 42-year-old resident of Warrenton. The trooper's name has not been released.
