Dona Nella Stiles Gaddy, 93, of Marshall, MO, died Monday, July 16, 2012, at the Big Bend Retreat in Slater, Mo.
Mrs. Gaddy endowed two University of Missouri scholarships and was the mother of Jean Gaddy Wilson, retired Associate Professor, School of Journalism.
Visitation will be from 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday, July 24, at Campbell Lewis Funeral Home, 226 South Odell Ave., Marshall, Mo. 65340. Mrs. Gaddy’s funeral will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 25, at the First Christian Church, 130 North Jefferson, Marshall, Mo. 65340. Dona was the daughter of Don Bisby Stiles and Nella Michael Stiles and was born near Princeton, Mo., in the farming community of Topsy on Jan. 17, 1919. She received her Graduate Nurse degree in 1941 from the University of Missouri School of Nursing.
On Feb. 1, 1941, Dona married Herschel J. Gaddy of Fair Grove, Mo., in Armstrong, Mo. They had met while both were students at the University.
From 1961 to 1984, Mrs. Gaddy was head nurse of the 60-bed hospital at the Marshall State School and Hospital (now the Habilitation Center). She managed a nursing staff of more than 50 in a full-service hospital. At the request of Dean Ruby Potter, Dona served on the Graduate Nurse Advisory Council to the University of Missouri School of Nursing for a number of years.
In 2002, Mrs. Gaddy contributed two endowed scholarships at the University of Missouri-Columbia. She established the Dona Nell Stiles Gaddy Nursing Scholarship, with preference given to undergraduate or graduate students having graduated from high school in Saline or Mercer counties. She also established the Herschel J. Gaddy Scholarship in Agronomy in memory of her late husband. This scholarship is awarded to Plant Sciences students in the College of Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources, with preference given to students having graduated from high school in Saline or Greene counties.
Mrs. Gaddy was an Inaugural Member of the School of Nursing’s Nightingale Society which recognizes contributors of significant gifts. In 2002 at the Nightingale Induction and Nursing School Awards Banquet, she was honored and recognized by Chancellor Brady Deaton and by Dean Rosemary T. Porter for both her endowed scholarship, as well as for being one of the oldest known living graduates of the School of Nursing.
She was a member of the Monticello Society, the benefactors' organization of the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, and was a Distinguished Fellow of the Jefferson Club, the campus-wide benefactor’s society of the University of Missouri-Columbia.
At her death, she was a 50-plus -year member of the Order of Eastern Star Marshall Chapter 408.
Mrs. Gaddy was a member of the First Christian Church in Marshall for more than 60 years and was the last remaining member of the Christian Comrades Class.
Mrs. Gaddy was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and her brother, Harley.
She is survived by her children: Jean Gaddy Wilson, the widow of Rick R. Wilson, Esq., of Marshall; Herschel J. Gaddy II, Ph.D. and his wife, Kris, of St. Joseph; Mary D. Gaddy, M.D., Billings, Mont., and Donald R. Gaddy and his wife, Donna, of Houston, Texas. She is also survived by her brother Bill Stiles and his wife, Mary, of Trenton, Mo.
Additionally, Mrs. Gaddy is survived by her grandchildren: Lindsay Wilson and her husband, Paul Koenig, Huntington Beach, Calif., Leigh Wilson, Sedalia, Cassie Melber, and her husband, Frank, of Derby, Kan., Herschel J. “Jake” Gaddy III and Michaela Gaddy, St. Joseph, Ethan and Evan Gaddy, Houston, Texas. Her great-grandchildren are: Olivia, Isabella and Gabrial Melber of Derby, Kan., and Henry Wilson Koenig of Huntington Beach, Calif.
