LONDON — Olympic organizers have sold 1.6 million tickets for the men's and women's soccer tournaments, and 500,000 are still available.
The sales exceed the 1.4 million sold at this summer's European Championship, London organizing committee spokeswoman Jackie Brock-Doyle said Wednesday.
Soccer is one of two sports that kick off the London Games early, along with archery.
More tickets have been sold for soccer than any other sport — largely because of the size of the venues — despite some concerns that the tournaments wouldn't be much of a draw.
Organizers said earlier this week that about 80 percent of the 37,000 people expected to attend Wednesday's doubleheader of U.S.-France and Colombia-North Korea in Glasgow had been handed freebies.
