FROM READERS: School supplies and winter wear needed

Thursday, July 26, 2012 | 10:00 a.m. CDT; updated 10:07 a.m. CDT, Thursday, July 26, 2012

Ron Schmidt is the project director at the Voluntary Action Center in Columbia. He last contributed to the From Readers section after the VAC's Christmas in July event July 12.

Voluntary Action Center is in need of school-supply donations to help ensure that Boone County’s low-income children are prepared for the upcoming school year. Donations of new supplies or money to purchase them are welcome at the VAC office, 403A Vandiver Drive.

If your business or organization would like to host a school supply drive, please contact Ron Schmidt at 573-874-2273, ext. 203, or projdir@vacmo.org. The most-needed items are scissors, college-rule and wide-rule loose-leaf paper, spiral notebooks, colored pencils and markers. Collected items can be dropped off at the VAC office by Tuesday, Aug. 7. In addition, all three Columbia Walmarts will have boxes for new school supplies dropoffs from July 20 to Aug. 7.

It is also not too early to think about Warm Up Columbia.

Voluntary Action Center, Commerce Bank and the local community are ready to Warm Up Columbia. Hundreds of coats, jackets, blankets, hats, gloves, scarves and socks will be collected by area churches, groups, families, and individuals between now and Oct. 18.

Clean and gently-used coats, jackets, blankets, hats, gloves, scarves and socks will be collected at each of the eight Commerce Bank locations in Columbia Oct. 1 to 18. In addition, if your business or organization would like to host a coat/hat/blanket drive, please contact Ron Schmidt at 573-874-2273, ext. 203, or projdir@vacmo.org.

Items will be distributed to the public on Saturday, Oct. 20 from 8:30 a.m. to noon at The Armory, 701 East Ash. All items are given out on a first-come, first-serve basis.

This story is part of a section of the Missourian called From Readers, which is dedicated to your voices and your stories. We hope you'll consider sharing. Here's how. Supervising editor is Joy Mayer.

Voluntary Action Center is STILL in need of school supply and backpack donations to help ensure that Boone County’s low-income children are prepared for the upcoming school year.

If your business or organization would like to host a school supply/backpack drive, please contact Ron Schmidt at 573-874-2273, ext. 203 or projdir@vacmo.

VAC is collecting school supplies and backpacks at all three Columbia Walmart locations from now until Tuesday, August 7. In addition, they're collecting them at the VAC office (403A Vandiver Drive) past Tuesday, August 7, but it’s helpful to get as much as they can by August 7 because they start distributing them on Saturday, August 11.

If you’re too busy to shop and donate school supplies to VAC for area children starting school, don't worry. VAC is also accepting monetary donations that they’ll use to purchase school supplies in bulk at a reduced price.

Common items needed are:

•#2 pencils
•3-ring binders
•Black ink pens
•Bottles of white glue
•College-ruled loose-leaf paper
•Colored pencils
•Composition notebooks
•Crayons
•Glue sticks
•Highlighters
•Index cards
•Large erasers
•Large washable markers
•Pocket folders
•Post it notes
•Rulers
•Scissors
•Scotch tape
•Spiral notebooks
•Wide-ruled loose-leaf paper

...plus backpacks.

I'm confused. Aren't Commerce Bank and the three WalMarts donating all this?

Great questions Mike. All eight Commerce Bank locations in Columbia are serving as drop off points for warm clothing and the three local WalMarts are allowing us to collect school supplies onsite; however, the donations themselves are coming from the community. In addition, donations may be dropped of at VAC if that is easier.
