An updated version of this article with additional details has been posted.

COLUMBIA — Mediacom customers in Columbia, Jefferson City and Springfield are currently without Internet service.

The Internet outage occurred this morning when a fiber optic cable, which carries the backbone of the Internet, was damaged. Mediacom officially declared an outage at 12:39 p.m. on its Twitter account.

Only Internet is affected by the outage — television services are still working.

This outage may affect the viewing of the Olympics for Mediacom customers who planned to watch the games online.

No estimate is available for repair of the cable at this time. We will continue to update this report as more information becomes available.
