COLUMBIA – Jerome Strauss Antel Jr., 88, of Columbia, died Sunday, July 29, 2012. He was born June 5, 1924, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Jerome and Miriam (Kleeblatt) Antel.
He married Charlotte Anne Frosh on June 22, 1952, in Washington, D.C. They moved to Columbia in 2002.
Mr. Antel served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a 1947 graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute, where he earned a degree in electrical engineering. He taught at George Washington University and worked at Harry Diamond Ordnance Laboratories.
He enjoyed many hobbies, including bonsai, bridge, golf, stamp collecting and traveling. Mr. Antel was an avid reader and also enjoyed doing challenging crossword puzzles. He was a founding member of the Mid-Missouri Bonsai Society, a member of the Columbia Philatelic Society and a member of the American Philatelic Society. Mr. Antel was an eager volunteer in several community activities.
Mr. Antel is survived by his wife, Charlotte; his son, Rusty, and his wife, Debbie; his sister, Barbara Corday, of Chicago; and his grandsons, Michael and Jonathan, of Columbia.
Mr. Antel had many friends, neighbors, club members, medical personnel and other community members who greatly enriched his life.
No services will be held, per Mr. Antel's final instructions.
Memorial donations may be given to the Columbia Public Library, 100 W. Broadway.
