UPDATE: Mediacom Internet outage caused by severed fiber communication line

COLUMBIA — Mediacom customers in Columbia, Jefferson City, Springfield and surrounding areas were without Internet service Tuesday due to an accident made by electrical contractors, Mediacom Communications Director Phyllis Peters said.

The Internet outage, which Mediacom announced via Twitter at 12:39 p.m., occurred after electrical contractors working near Asbury accidentally severed a fiber communication line while setting poles in the area, Peters said.

The problem, which only affected Mediacom's Internet service, was corrected at 5:36 p.m., Peters said.

"We really regret that customers were inconvenienced," Peters said. "But there really wasn't any preventing it on our part. An accident occurred."
