KANSAS CITY — Missouri Republicans elevated U.S. Rep. Todd Akin to a Senate showdown against incumbent Democrat Claire McCaskill on Tuesday, and also endorsed a state constitutional amendment that permits public prayer and allow students to avoid assignments which violate their religious beliefs.
