COLUMBIA — Columbia police were dispatched to a reported assault early Wednesday morning on the 1500 block of University Avenue.

At 1:42 a.m., a woman was walking home by herself, looking at her cellphone when a man walked by her in the opposite direction. After he passed her, he turned around, grabbed her shoulders and pulled her to the ground, Sgt. Jill Schlude said. The victim was left with a minor injury to her back but refused medical attention.

The suspect ran east on University Avenue and got into the driver's side of a red  sport utility vehicle, then drove away, Schlude said.

The suspect was described as an Asian male with a stocky build, dark trimmed hair, clean shaven, between 5 feet 8 inches and 5 feet 9 inches. He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and shorts.

No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.

Supervising editor is Celia Darrough.
