COLUMBIA — Stephens College will install two new bridge spans across College Avenue and Broadway beginning Thursday night.

To minimize traffic disruption, all lanes under the two bridges will be closed from 8 p.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Friday. Sidewalks under the bridges will also be closed periodically during the installation, according to a press release from Stephens College.

Pedestrians, cyclists and those in wheelchairs should be cautious when crossing the intersection on the available crosswalks. Detour signs will be posted around the area.

People are strongly encouraged to use the alternative routes during the project, Amy Gipson, spokeswoman of Stephens College, said.

Access to the spans is anticipated to be available after the guardrails are installed, which could happen early next week, according to the press release.

The old spans were removed July 9. The bridges have stood for about 40 years. In addition renovating the spans, Stephens College plans to repair deteriorating walkways and abutments around the bridges.
