Man wanted in connection with assault

Thursday, August 9, 2012 | 5:39 p.m. CDT

COLUMBIA —  Columbia police are searching for a man suspected of assaulting his girlfriend Monday in the 1200 block of Stone Court.

Joe Henry Hawkins III is wanted on suspicion of second-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon and felony resisting arrest. He also has an outstanding warrant for his arrest for a parole violation.

After an argument around 6:40 p.m. Monday, a 24-year-old woman was struck in the face, possibly with a handgun, knocking her unconscious, police reported. She was taken to the hospital and released Tuesday.

Officers confirmed that Hawkins had a handgun at the time of the assault, according to a release from the Columbia Police Department.

Police said Hawkins should be considered armed and dangerous.

Hawkins may have shaved his head to avoid capture, police said, and he has tattoos on both arms, one reading “Illinois” and the other a cross with the word “BOYSZ.”

Police are asking that anyone with information about Hawkins contact the department at 874-7652; to remain anonymous, call 875-8477.
