COLUMBIA — Klifton R. Altis of Columbia died Thursday, August 9, 2012. He was 88.
He was born Jan. 28, 1924, in Kansas City to Ezra and Elsie (East) Altis. He was married to Barbara Jeanne (Ekstrum) Altis for 63 years.
Mr. Altis was a graduate of the University of Kansas and a master sergeant in the Armed Forces during World War II in the Pacific Ocean theater. He went on to work as an electrician and a sales manager at an insurance company and was the owner and manager of the Barzell apartment rental company in Columbia — a title he held for 44 years.
He was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church in Columbia and the Sanibel Community Church in Florida. He was a proud Mason and Shriner.
Mr. Altis was also a member of the local Prophet Investment Club, Missouri Symphony Society and the Columbia Apartment Association.
He was an avid nature lover and talented photographer who traveled extensively.
Mr. Altis is survived by his wife, Barbara Jeanne (Ekstrum) Altis; a sister, Ruth Altis; three sons, Kristopher Altis, and his wife, Susan, Kevin Altis, and his wife, Nancy Tindle, Kurtis Altis, and his wife, Beth; a daughter, Kandee Altis Bennett, and her husband, Jack Bennett; and two grandchildren, Evan Altis and Josef Altis.
His brother, Harold Altis, died earlier.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church, 16 Hitt St., with a reception following at the church.
The family will have a private burial ceremony Tuesday.
