COLUMBIA – The Columbia Police Department is investigating a stabbing that occurred near Columbia Cemetery on Tuesday night and are in search of a male suspect.

A 19-year-old woman was walking along Broadway near the cemetery when a white male tackled and attempted to stab her just before 8 p.m. The victim was able to fight off the suspect, who fled on foot, police said in a news release.

Officer Latisha Stroer said a community member found the victim walking east of where the stabbing occurred and called the police, who met them there.

The victim was taken to the hospital, where she was treated for a quarter-inch cut on her chest, cuts on her legs and a cut on her hand that required stitches.

The suspect is a white male in his mid-30s with blond hair, multiple tattoos and piercings. He is described as being average height and was last seen wearing a black shirt and jeans.

Supervising editor is Ann Elise Taylor.
