FROM READERS: 'Own the Night' teen photo contest winners announced

Saturday, August 18, 2012 | 7:23 p.m. CDT
Laury Lopez is the division two winner (ages 15-18) of Daniel Boone Regional Library's "Own the Night" teen photo contest. This is his winning photo, entitled "Live Night."

Brandy Sanchez is a regional services librarian and DBRLTeen blog coordinator for Daniel Boone Regional Library.

As part of our “Own the Night” Teen Summer Reading Program, the library invited young adults to submit their own nighttime-inspired photographs. Contestants captured images of colorful sunsets, bursts of fireworks, and plenty of starlight. The library received a total of 22 entries, all of which can be viewed at teens.dbrl.org.

Coming up this fall, the library will host a flash-fiction contest for young adults. We are asking teens to submit their original spooky short stories in 250 words or less. All entries must include the phrase, "It came from the library." Winning stories and honorable mentions will be published on the library’s teen blog and winners will receive a Barnes & Noble gift card. Find contest rules and submission guidelines after Monday, September 10, at teens.dbrl.org.

Photo contest award winners:

Poisonous Stalker

People's Choice: Winner Crystal Hayden of Columbia received nearly 70 votes for her submission, “Poisonous Stalker.” When asked about her inspiration for this photo, she said, “Taking this picture helped me overcome my fear of spiders. Fear inspired me!” Crystal will receive a $15 gift card to Barnes & Noble as her award.

Night Owl

Division 1 (ages 12-14): Laurel Royer of Fulton is the Division 1 winner for her photograph, “Night Owl.” When asked about her photo, she said, “I really like the style where pictures are taken from outside a house looking in. It gives you a glimpse into your subject’s life and how they act. You can be a fly on the wall.” Laurel will receive a $25 gift card to Barnes & Noble as her award.

Live Night

Division 2 (ages 15-18): The winner among those contestants age 15-18 is Laury Lopez of Columbia for his photo “Live Night.” Laury says, “I really enjoy photography and usually carry my camera with me everywhere I go. Sometimes I just sit outside and look around waiting for a good opportunity. I really enjoy looking at the stars and so I decided to stay outside late one night and just take pictures of the stars.”
