COLUMBIA — Jefferson and West junior high schools will dismiss at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday because of heat, Columbia Public Schools announced. As of this academic year, they are the only two schools in the district without air conditioning building-wide.

The predicted high temperature for Wednesday and Thursday is 93 degrees with low humidity, according to the National Weather Service website.

Low humidity is common with the drought Missouri has experienced this summer, said Mark Britt , meteorologist at the National Weather Service in St. Louis.

Britt said that after Thursday, temperatures will lower to about 90 degrees, which is still above the normal temperature for this time of year. He predicted below-normal precipitation but above-normal temperatures into the fall.
