COLUMBIA — The Missouri men's and women's cross country teams have been ranked sixth in the Midwest region by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Tigers coach Joe Lynn said in a release that the rankings are “a good starting point” but that he wants to be ranked higher at the end of the season. He said the teams have “a lot of work to do” before they can expect to climb up the polls.

Oklahoma State won the Big 12 Conference last year and took the top spot in the Midwest Region coming into this season. Oklahoma, Tulsa, Minnesota and Iowa State round out the top five in the Midwest Region.

Missouri begins its season Friday night at the Missouri Cross Country Open, which takes places at A.L. Gustin Golf Course. The women’s 5K begins at 6:30 p.m., and the men’s event is scheduled to start half an hour later.
