Rain from Isaac expected as soon as Friday morning

COLUMBIA — Heavy rain remained likely this weekend, and the National Weather Service expected remnants of Tropical Storm Isaac to begin affecting central Missouri on Friday morning.

The tropical system was forecast to bring 3 to 5 inches of rain to a widespread area with locally higher amounts possible.

The weather service in St. Louis, in a statement issued Thursday morning, said periods of rain, heavy at times, were expected Friday night and Saturday.

"While episodes of rain will likely continue into Saturday night and perhaps into Sunday, it is not expected to be as heavy," according to the weather service.

Even with drought conditions, the weather service warned Labor Day weekend vacationers not to be fooled by low water levels: "Rainfall over this weekend will likely cause rapid and significant rises in water levels and could lead to some flooding."
