Friday, August 31, 2012 | 8:21 p.m. CDT

COLUMBIA — Boone County had eight outside fires over a 30-hour period.

"It's due to the dry conditions," Boone County Fire Protection District spokeswoman and Fire District Lt. Martina Pounds said.

The city and county fire department reported the fires as follows:

  • At 2:16 a.m. Thursday, the Southern Boone County Fire Protection District responded to a fire at U.S. 63 South and Turkey Creek.
  • At 10:33 a.m. Thursday, the Columbia Fire Department responded to a small, backyard fire at 905 Charles St. It started after a recreational fire rekindled but was put out by the time fire engines arrived, Columbia Fire Department Battalion Chief and Fire Marshal Brad Fraizer said.

  •  At 11:39 a.m. Thursday, the Boone County Fire Protection District responded to  a small fire at U.S. 63 North and Highway NN. The cause was undetermined.

  •  At 1:46 p.m. Thursday, the Boone County Fire Protection District responded to a fire along Interstate 70 East. An 18-wheeler lost a tire and sparks started small fires in the grass. The fires burned the highway's ditch from Route Z exit to the Callaway County line, Pounds said. The driver of the truck was fine.

  • At 5:04 p.m. Thursday, the Columbia Fire Department responded to a fire at U.S. 63 North and Interstate 70 East. Firefighters were only on the scene for eight minutes, Fraizer said. The cause of the fire was undetermined.

  • At 6:48 p.m. Thursday, the Boone County Fire Protection District responded to a fire at 5353 Lockwood Lane. The fire, which started in the brush, burned about 20 acres, Pounds said. The cause was undetermined.

  •  At 8:22 p.m. Thursday, the Boone County Fire Protection District and the Columbia Fire Department both responded to a fire at 11161 Interstate 70 Drive. Pounds estimated that the fire burned 10 to 12 acres. The cause was undetermined.

  • At 8:23 a.m. Friday, the Boone County Fire Protection District responded to a fire at 820 Parkview Court. The cause was undetermined.
