COLUMBIA -- Columbia School Board member Paul Cushing will resign effective Oct. 1, Columbia Public Schools spokeswoman Michelle Baumstark said Thursday morning.

Cushing, who was elected to the board in April and serves on the communication and finance committees, is moving to Minnesota for a job, Baumstark said.

Baumstark said Cushing wanted to give the other members time to discuss a search process before his departure. The board will accept applications to fill the vacancy, narrow that pool for interviews and then appoint a new member at a regular meeting.

Don Ludwig in 2007 was the last board member to resign mid-term, and current member Jim Whitt was appointed to the board in 2009 after member Rosie Tippin died, Baumstark said.

Supervising editor is John Schneller.
