VOTERS GUIDE 2012: Candidates for sheriff, county commissioner in Howard County

Howard County


WHAT’S THE JOB? The Howard County Sheriff is the chief law enforcement officer in the county. The sheriff has full jurisdiction in his county and is responsible for serving court documents, operating the jail and executing warrants among other responsibilities.

Personal: He is married to Dina Haskamp, a nurse. They have three children, Tyler, Ryan and Maia. Tyler is 25 and in the Navy. Ryan is 22 and is in his fourth year of medical school at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Maia is 14 and in high school.

Party Affiliation: Democrat

Web: Polson has no campaign website.

Occupation: He works as the Howard County sheriff.

Education: Polson attended some college

Background: Polson has been in law enforcement for over 20 years. He was appointed sheriff Oct 1, 1998, by the county commission and has been re-elected four times. During his career as sheriff, he has worked on six homicides and multiple methamphetamine lab busts.

MIKE NEAL (I), Howard County

Address: Neal's address was not given.

Age: 48

Personal: Neal is married with two sons, Shaun and Chris; and a daughter, Miranda.

Party affiliation: Independent

Web: Neal has no current campaign website.

Occupation: He does home maintenance work and is a police officer in the Fayette area.

Education: Neal is a graduate of Fayette High School.

Background: Neal has been a commissioned police officer since 1992. He was born in Branson and raised in Fayette. He only lived outside of Missouri while he served in the Navy.

Howard County Western District Commissioner


The Howard County Western District County Commissioner (District 2) is one of the three elected positions in the governing body who will help set local policies such as the county budget. The commission is also responsible for supervising all county departments and divisions. The board also communicates with many county boards, commissions and other government departments to ensure cooperation.

Personal: McMillan is married with eight children, who are all married.

Party affiliation: Democrat

Occupation: McMillan serves as Western District County Commissioner.  Prior to his appointment, he served four terms as the Glasgow mayor.

Background: Gov. Jay Nixon appointed Howard McMillian as Western District County Commissioner in 2009.  Prior to his appointment, he worked at Kansas City Power & Light for 32 years.

Personal: Davidson is not married

Party affiliation: Republican

Web: He has no campaign website.

Occupation: Davidson delivers for Domino’s Pizza.

Education: He is a high school graduate and finished some college.

Background: Davidson was born in Santa Ana, Calif., but was raised in Holden, Mo. He lived in Colorado from 2008 to 2010 before returning to Missouri, settling in the town of New Franklin.
