VOTERS GUIDE 2012: Two county officers on the ballot for sheriff in Morgan County

Sheriff

WHAT’S THE JOB:

The Morgan County Sheriff is responsible for supervising the Morgan County Jail and the court security. The sheriff’s office will answer all calls about criminal activity. The sheriff is also responsible for ensuring that civil papers are served, as well as other standard law enforcement duties. The sheriff receives a salary of $50,000 per year plus the cost of living.

JIM PETTY, D-Versailles

Personal: Age 67. He is married with two sons and one daughter.

Education: Bachelor of Arts in criminal justice, Central Missouri State University; graduated from the Highway Patrol Academy and the National Sheriff’s Academy.

Occupation: Current sheriff. Formerly a highway patrolman for 25 years.

Background: Member of the MoSMART board appointed by Gov. Jay Nixon. He has a total of 36 years experience in law enforcement.

KENDALL CONKLIN, R-Versailles

Personal: Age 42. He is married with two sons and one daughter.

Education: Graduated from Missouri Sheriff’s Training Academy; studying criminal justice through Drury University.

Occupation: Currently unemployed.

Background: Approximately eight years of law enforcement experience as a sheriff’s deputy for Miller County and a city police officer for the city of Laurie.

Public Administrator

WHAT’S THE JOB:

The Morgan County Public Administrator is an official elected for a four-year term. The public administrator is responsible for acting as a guardian and/or conservator for those individuals who the court determines are disabled or incapacitated. The public administrator will work with those individuals and their families to make decisions in the best interest of the individual. The public administrator receives a salary of $45,000 per year plus the cost of living.

DORIS ELLIOTT, D-Versailles

Background: Served as the administrator for the local office of Burrell Behavioral Health in 1999. She has 15 years of experience working with disabled and incapacitated individuals. She also has experience as a business owner from 1979 to 1992.

AMANDA HUFFMAN, R -Versailles

Personal: Age 38. She is married with two daughters.
