VOTERS GUIDE 2012: Sheriff, Western District commissioner on November ballot in Maries County

Associate Commissioner, Western District

WHAT’S THE JOB:

Maries County has eastern and western district associate commissioners, in addition to a presiding commissioner. Commissioners oversee budgets for the courthouse and other departments. They are in charge of the courthouse and its maintenance and maintaining the 220 miles of country roads.

ED FAGRE (D) Maries County

Personal: Age 58. He is married to Delores Fagre and has two children.

Education: High school diploma.

Current occupation: Associate Commissioner, Western District; owns a cattle farm in Maries County.

Background: Has driven a school bus route for Maries County for 30 years.

DAVID L. HUTCHISON (R), Maries County

Personal: Age 69. He is married to Monita Hutchison and has two children and a grandchild.

Education: Attended East Central College in Union, Mo., for two years; has a degree in criminal law from MU.

Current Occupation: Chief deputy sheriff in Maries County.

Background: Was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy; worked in management for Daimler Chrysler Corporation in Fenton.

Sheriff

WHAT’S THE JOB:

The Maries County sheriff is in charge of managing the sheriff’s department, keeping the 9-1-1 services operational and any civil process in the county. The sheriff is also in charge of the jail and making sure bailiffs are in court. The sheriff keeps track of the budget, oversees road officers and dispatches for the local police.

HAROLD "CHRIS" HEITMAN (R), Maries County

Personal: Age 33. He has one daughter.

Education: Degree in criminal justice law enforcement from St. Louis Community College, attended St. Louis University and Jefferson College in Hillsboro.

Current occupation: Maries County Sheriff

Background: Road supervisor for Gasconade County; chief of police in Belle; Maries County sheriff since 2009.

BUDDY THOMPSON (D), Maries County

Personal: Age 41. He is married to Deana Thompson and has one daughter.

Education: High school diploma and all law enforcement certifications to be a deputy sheriff.

Current occupation: Self-employed small business owner.

Background: Thompson has been a deputy sheriff and reserve deputy sheriff for the past 24 1/2 years in Maries County, and he owns and operates a school bus route for Maries County.

JOHN K. GROVES (I), Maries County

Personal: Age 62. He is married to Silvia Groves, and has three children and seven grandchildren.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in psychology and sociology from Missouri Southern State University; master’s degree in psychology in counseling from Webster University.

Current occupation: Drury University adjunct professor of psychology, sociology and criminal justice for the past 32 years.  

Background: Retired as a lieutenant colonel from the military, where he was in the police and criminal investigations for 21 years. Served as commander of narcotics and street crimes and, and street crimes and federal liaison officer for Pulaski County.
