LETTER TO THE EDITOR: See numbers as colors, hear tones in numbers

Great Vox article: "Reading Rainbow." It hasn't been that long ago (Greek and Roman empires) that numbers and letters were considered qualitative as well as quantitative. Rudolf Steiner (Austrian, 1865-1925), the founder of the Anthroposophical Society, made correlations between numbers and color, sounds and tastes.

The color, tones and tastes of numbers and the alphabet are not "spiritual" as much as they are higher frequency/complexity functions of the physical body. Rudolf Steiner would have correlated them with what he considered our other "eyes" which are centered in the forehead, throat, heart, navel and generative area. Each of these "eyes" has their particular range of frequency and complexity which would allow for a different type of perceptive ability.

To "see" numbers as colors would imply an ability to perceive the higher frequencies as related to the navel. To "hear" tones in the numbers would relate to the throat "eye." To "taste" numbers would indicate perceptive abilities within the frequency range of the brow "eye."

It is possible for any person to perceive the qualities inherent in the numbers. It simply requires practicing imaging the higher frequencies while consciously "standing" on and "eye." Direction, too, is important. Sometimes a person will be able to "see" better facing north, for example, but ideally, we may someday be able to stand in any direction and call up in full consciousness the range of qualities inherent in the numbers and alphabet.
