CRUSH Hunger 2012 is a group trying to feed the needy. CRUSH means Columbians Reaching Unfed and Starving Homes. We are a coalition of businesses, churches, schools and community groups that are trying to feed the needy, locally and internationally. Partnering with the Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri, Salvation Army and Numana, we are hosting a food packaging event to help feed the hungry. This event will happen on Sunday, September 30th from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Parkade Center.
WHAT: CRUSH Hunger 2012, a packaging event to help feed the hungry
WHEN: Sunday, Sept. 30, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
WHERE: Parkade Center
VOLUNTEER: Anyone can volunteer. Register here, or just show up.
DONATE: A 16 oz. or smaller jar of peanut butter for the Food Bank's local Buddy Pack program
The goal of this event is to put together 261,360 meals for the starving and to bring in 2,613 16 oz. or smaller peanut butter jars for the Food Bank's "Buddy Pack" program. We will also have several booths at the event showcasing the many organizations that are passionately serving Columbia's needy. This will raise local awareness to the needs of Columbia's less fortunate and what we can do as a community to help them!
The food packing event will be a great team/family building event, involving a 2-hour shift of an assembly line of packaging simple, nutritious meals consisting of rice, soy protein, freeze dried beans, and 21 vitamins and minerals targeted to help the immune system of malnourished people. These ingredients are measured into bags, sealed, boxed and prepared for shipment for the Salvation Army. The cost of each life-sustaining meal is only 23 cents. That includes ingredients, packaging, and international shipping.
To help make this event a success for a quarter-million meals, we will need 1,000 volunteers and $60,113. It would be amazing if we could raise enough money to feed 1,000,000 starving (Kansas did this last year and fed 660,000 people)!
Alive in Christ Lutheran Church was the starting organizer of CRUSH Hunger 2012 and is committed to this event. AIC is providing some of the leadership and Alive In Christ is helping to cover the administrative costs to make the event happen, so that when someone donates money...all funds go to feed the hungry. Alive In Christ is also providing 10% of the funds to feed the first 261,360 people.
What motivated Alive in Christ Lutheran Church to do something was the recognition of these key facts about hunger and they sought an opportunity to CRUSH Hunger and bring Columbia together... the compelling facts:
