SPRINGFIELD — A man is in custody in Springfield after a standoff at a Catholic church.

Springfield Police Department Lt. Scott Umbarger said a priest called police about 9 p.m. Tuesday to say someone was destroying property inside the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

Umbarger said the priest and a parishioner confronted the man but left the church after he pulled a gun. A second priest also was able to leave.

After about two hours, the man came out, dropped the weapon and surrendered peacefully.

No one was injured.

Umbarger said police don't know what motivated the incident. A damage estimate was not immediately available.
