COLUMBIA — A man died in a house fire Tuesday night near Millersburg.

Callaway County Sheriff's Investigator Bob Smith said he couldn't release the man's name because his next of kin had not yet been located and notified.

A neighbor alerted emergency responders at 10:23 p.m. to the fire, which left the house nearly a total loss, Smith said. Firefighters were first told there might be two people in the house. At about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, the remains of a man were found with the assistance of a cadaver dog.

Smith said he thought the man lived alone.

Smith declined to give the address of the house pending notification of the victim's family.

The Millersburg Fire Protection District, which responded to the call, could not be reached for more information about the fire.
