Hickman and Rock Bridge high schools cancel homecoming parades

COLUMBIA — Homecoming parades at Hickman and Rock Bridge high schools have been canceled due to the combination of crowds from the Alabama-Missouri game on Oct. 13 and construction downtown.

Michelle Baumstark, Columbia Public Schools spokesperson, said school administrators want to ensure the safety of all students and community members who attend homecoming events. Baumstark, Hickman High School assistant principal Doug Mirts and Rock Bridge High School principal Mark Maus all cited concerns about law enforcement being stretched to capacity with the Alabama game.

"It just isn't a good time to have a parade," Mirts said.

Maus said that the homecoming parade used to be much bigger, but now it isn't the most important homecoming tradition. He added that they will still be having their dance and honoring the homecoming court.
