COLUMBIA — Sophomore pitcher Shannon Greene's focus appeared to not waver during the 7-0 shutout victory over Jefferson City in the district tournament final on Friday. Despite only throwing two strikeouts in the entire game, one in the third inning and the other in the fifth, Greene was able to find her spots and force multiple groundouts and fly outs.
"I had to be upbeat the entire time and trust my teammates," Greene said.
Greene was able to contribute off the pitcher's mound as well, hitting a single in the third inning and advancing to third off a double from sophomore shortstop Molly Carter. Green also scored off a single from sophomore Taylor Patton and hit a home-run in the fourth inning.
Second baseman Autumn McCoy also had a notable game, going 2-for-3 at bat with a single and a single RBI. Her defense was critical in the shutout victory with two tags during base steal attempts.
At the end of the game, the team was presented with the division trophy and embraced in a group hug.
"I went to this school and it's just really great to see this team do well," Hickman coach Courtney Haskell said.
Haskell played softball for Hickman as a student and this was the second time in her coaching career that Hickman has won the district tournament.
With the district championship in hand, the team looks ahead to the sectionals game scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 10. Hickman's opponent, game time and location are to be determined.
