Hickman softball team advances to state quarterfinals

The Hickman girls softball team advanced to the quarterfinals of the Class 4 State Tournament with an 8-7 victory over host Rolla in Wednesday night's sectional play.

Hickman (19-7) was leading 8-4 entering the seventh inning, and despite three runs from Rolla (19-4), held on for the victory. The Kewpies move on to play Ozark (24-6), an 11-2 winner over Webb City on Wednesday. The quarterfinal game is set for 3 p.m. Saturday in Ozark.

The Kewpies (19-7) gathered 10 hits, led by Sydney Washington, who went 2 for 4 including a home run in the fourth inning. Washington, who scored twice and had two RBIs, scored the winning run in the sixth inning on a wild pitch.

Allie Dishinger hit a home run in the third inning for Hickman, and Molly Carter went 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles.

Morgan Hawkins was winning pitcher, striking out four and walking one to give up five hits in five innings.
