COLUMBIA — The former office manager for a mid-Missouri water supply district has been sentenced to five years' probation for stealing $7,000.

The Columbia Daily Tribune reported that 46-year-old Michelle Leverenz will serve her five-year sentence in prison if she fails to meet the conditions of her probation. She previously pleaded guilty in Boone County Circuit Court to one count of felony stealing.

Prosecutors say she stole the money by writing unauthorized checks to herself from the account of Public Water Supply District 4. The thefts were uncovered in a 2010 financial audit.

Leverenz's husband, Jeff, was elected in April to his third, two-year term on the Hallsville Board of Aldermen. The family moved to Centralia shortly after the election, and Jeff Leverenz resigned his seat on the board in July.
