Berta Garrett worked as nurse at Ellis Fischel Cancer Center

COLUMBIA — Berta Dean Garrett of Columbia died Friday, Oct. 19, 2012. She was 82. 

She was born March 26, 1930, in Columbia to Kenneth Creed and Mildred Fay (Forbis) Dunn. She married Donald Garrett on March 28, 1953. 

Mrs. Garrett earned her nursing degree from the Deaconess School of Nursing in St. Louis, which is now called Chamberlain College of Nursing. Mrs. Garrett worked at the Ellis Fischel Cancer Center for many years and helped to co-found a branch of the Visiting Nurses Association. 

Mrs. Garrett was a member of Hallsville Baptist Church.

She is survived by her son, Bruce, and his wife, Melinda, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; three daughters, Nancy Nowlin, Kim Theberge and Jenifer Garrett, all of Columbia; and nine grandchildren as well as nine great-grandchildren. 

Her husband, Donald, died earlier. 

Visitation will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W. Service will follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.
