TIGERS REPORT: Missouri, Kentucky both still looking for first SEC win

Friday, October 26, 2012 | 11:00 a.m. CDT; updated 12:50 p.m. CDT, Friday, October 26, 2012
Tailback Marcus Murphy returns a punt during the third quarter of Missouri's 42-10 loss to Alabama on Oct. 13 at Memorial Stadium. Murphy scored Missouri's only touchdown of the day on a 98-yard kickoff return.

Basketball season can't come soon enough for Missouri and Kentucky fans.

Both schools have struggled on the football field but were selected to finish in the Top 3 in the Southeastern Conference this season for basketball and had multiple players named to the preseason All-SEC teams.

Coming into Saturday's game, both football teams are winless in SEC play. Kentucky, unlike Missouri, has also struggled outside of conference play. The Wildcats' only win of the season came Sept. 8 against Kent State.

One reason for Kentucky's struggles is that the team has sustained injuries at almost every position this season and has had to play a lot of freshmen. A few of the players, including quarterback Patrick Towles, could be healthy and ready to play Saturday.

The Wildcats showed last week that they are no pushover in a narrow loss to Georgia.

Marcus Murphy getting national recognition

Kick and punt returner Marcus Murphy was the only Missouri player named to Mark Schlabach's midseason All-American team. Murphy has four return touchdowns this season, including one two weeks ago against No. 1 Alabama.

Big SEC games this weekend

The SEC East division could be decided Saturday. Florida beat South Carolina 44-11 last week and would clinch the East division title with a win against Georgia. Florida, who plays Missouri on Nov. 3, is undefeated, and Georgia has already lost to South Carolina.

The SEC West division race won't be decided Saturday, but the Alabama-Mississippi State game in Tuscaloosa, Ala., will have a big impact on who wins that division. Both teams are undefeated and would control their own destiny with a win.
