JEFFERSON CITY — Missouri Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill is hitting the road in her re-election campaign for the first time since canceling events to spend time with her ailing mother.
McCaskill was to campaign Thursday in Lebanon, Springfield, Joplin and Kansas City. She had canceled a cross-state tour more than a week ago when her mother was hospitalized.
Betty Anne McCaskill died Monday at her home in St. Louis, and her daughter returned to campaigning Wednesday with some events in the St. Louis area.
McCaskill's Republican challenger, congressman Todd Akin, did not have a public campaign schedule Thursday. But many others on the Republican slate of statewide candidates were teaming up on a two-day trip taking them around Missouri.
