Terell Stafford and his quintet will perform at Murry's on Sunday.

This article is a part of ArtTalk, a new Missourian project inviting people from the arts community to tell us what’s cooking around town. To submit something you're excited about and open the eyes of the community to local art, fill out the form at the bottom of this story. Find past submissions here.

Here's the latest in the series, written by Josh Chittum.

Q: What's your connection to Columbia's art scene?

A: I'm assistant director and public information officer at the "We Always Swing" Jazz Series — a nonprofit arts organization with a mission to present, promote, preserve and celebrate the great American art form known as "jazz."

Q: What artistic project or product are you excited about?

A: This Sunday, we'll welcome Terell Stafford and his quintet to Murry's where they will play the music of prolific jazz composer Billy Strayhorn. While Stafford has established a voice all his own, combing lyricism and a deep love of melody with a spirited, adventurous edge, the director of jazz studies at Temple University knows and respects the rich trumpet tradition of his predecessors. Stafford's career, now 25 years strong, incorporates small group work with a quintet of NEA Jazz Masters: Benny Golson, McCoy Tyner, Kenny Barron, Jimmy Heath and Frank Wess as well as being a regular contributor to the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. It's safe to say Stafford is a heavyweight of modern jazz.

Q: Why are you excited, and why might other people be interested?

A: It's always great to bring world-class jazz artists to a great club such as Murry's. The intimate space brings the audience that much closer to high-caliber musicians creating music right before their ears and eyes. It's that spontaneous creation coupled with the exceptional food and service at Murry's that makes "Sundays @ Murry's" a fantastic way to take in some jazz.

Q: Is there an event attached to the project?

A: Time: Shows start at 3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Doors open one hour before show time.

Date: Nov. 4

Place: Murry's at 3701 Green Meadows Way

Cost: $13 - $37
